He became editor of Cosmic Stories and Stirring Science Stories in 1941. After World War II, Wollheim worked for Avon Books until 1952. There he edited the Avon Fantasy Reader, the Avon Science Fiction Reader, and the first scifi original anthology, The Girl with the Hungry Eyes (1949). He spent the next twenty years at Ace Books, and created one of the most popular scifi book lists in the U.S. Among his writers who got their first breaks with Wollheim were John Brunner, Samuel R.
